Developing Emotional Intelligence, or EQ, is a lot like learning (or trying to learn) to drive on the wrong side of the road! I've had the chance to work with quite a few companies in England recently. One of the incredible lessons from these trips has been the amount of deliberate and intense effort required to: ...get into the car on the wrong side ... turn the wrong direction ...back up without hitting my right hand on the window (as I attempt to put my arm over the passenger seat) The most intriguing lesson, however, has been the transition of comfort. Most of my UK trips last about a week. By midweek, now even sooner, I find an uneasy level of comfort with wrong-side driving! I'll take a turn on a back road, see a car approaching from the other direction, and experience a moment of hesitation as I try to recall which side is correct. Somehow, I will have become a bit too comfortable by this point with driving on the wrong side of the road. Now it doesn't feel so wrong, and that feels wrong. What once felt completely wrong now feels almost too right, which feels wrong. The last few sentences may need to be re-read (or re-written), but that's about how confusing the experience can be. Becoming more emotionally intelligent - something every single one of us should work at - seems to follow the same process. It may require weeks or months of a highly deliberate strategy before you and I reach a "new normal" in our emotional awareness and management. Do something with this.
We all stumble over ideas from time to time that we know we should implement. Please take one thought from this video and put it in your calendar every single day for the next few weeks. Set an alarm (or alarms) or get a friend involved. Journaling is powerful. Perhaps end your days asking: "What was my focus today and how did it go? What will I continue tomorrow and what will I change?" "The emotional brain is 24 times more powerful than the rational brain." ~ Erasmus of Rotterdam
