In 1805, the crew on Nelson's HMS Victory were absolutely brilliant in the basics. Just 7 years later, they were not. London's famous Trafalgar Square exists because of this dedication to the basics. Horatio Nelson is considered one of history's greatest naval commanders, but he was killed in the defining battle. What happened afterwards?
This story in this short video is repeated throughout history. It happens in our relationships, careers, companies, nations, naval crews, even sports teams! These words of Nelson reiterate his focus on mastery of the basics:
- "Time is everything; five minutes make the difference between victory and defeat."
- "No captain can do very wrong if he places his ship alongside that of the enemy."
One of the best leadership tests is to simply ask a leader to change something for the better.
Is there an area of your life, your leadership, your organization, your community, your family - that needs positive change in order to become "brilliant in the basics"?
